Understanding MONUSCO and Rwanda's Criticism in the DRC Conflict

The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has been one of the largest and longest-running UN peacekeeping operations in history. Established in 1999 (initially as MONUC before becoming MONUSCO in 2010), the mission has faced numerous challenges in its efforts to bring stability to the war-torn eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). At the center of this complexity is Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, whose government has been one of the most vocal critics of the UN mission. This analysis examines the multifaceted nature of Rwanda's criticism of MONUSCO, explores the potential consequences of MONUSCO's withdrawal, and evaluates possible alternatives that could fill the security vacuum in eastern DRC.
